Acorus americanus (Sweet Flag) is a staple of many wet prairie and marsh communities around the Midwest. It can be differentiated from many other species by its extremely pleasant and sweet aroma emanating from broken leaves, it reminds me of fruit loops :) It has a very distinct lime green foliage that also sets it apart from cattail and other marsh plants. This plant is a tough survivor that holds it own in the rough an tumble river and stream banks and against the truly aggressive hybrid cattail and all mighty and evil reed canary grass. Do not confuse this native species with its non-native European cousin Acorus calamus, which has an extremely pronounced midvein and is typically much taller in stature. It is a bit confusing as these two were just recently split into two distinct species.
