Nick Fuller
Principal Ecological Officer
Senior Ecological Consultant | Stormwater & Conservation Compliance
Since 2004, Nick Fuller has provided high-level ecological leadership, restoration design, and regulatory guidance across the Midwest. Serving as a trusted land manager and consultant alongside the region's elite public agencies and conservation districts, Nick brings direct experience managing over $5 million annually in large-scale ecological restorations, high-profile capital improvements, and natural resource stewardship. He specializes in de-risking complex developments, securing municipal and federal permit sign-offs, and protecting critical habitats while reducing long-term lifecycle maintenance costs.
Core Expertise & Value Drivers
- Highest-Tier Natural Area & Habitat Management: Extensive experience directing stewardship across Illinois Nature Preserves and high-value conservation holdings, including habitat enhancement and recovery plans for federal and state threatened and endangered (T&E) species.
- Flora of the Chicago Region Botanical Precision: Custom seed mix and vegetation designs engineered strictly around local geology, hydrology, and precise plant associate data from Flora of the Chicago Region. This scientific rigor ensures resilient establishment, prevents species drop-out, and eliminates costly re-seeding cycles.
- Stormwater & Watershed Ordinance Compliance: Defensible, agency-vetted expertise navigating native vegetation mandates and performance standards throughout the Chicago region—including DuPage, Lake, McHenry, Kane, Will, and Cook counties (under the MWRD Watershed Management Ordinance).
- Bond Release & Agency Sign-Offs: Proven methodologies for guiding sites through strict 3-to-5-year monitoring windows to achieve performance criteria, release developer letters of credit, and satisfy USACE wetland mitigation requirements.
- Multidisciplinary Specialist Network: Established collaboration with premier regional scientists—including herpetologists, mammalogists, entomologists, and soil scientists—providing comprehensive ecological assessments, bio-inventories, and targeted mitigation planning.
- Lifecycle Cost Reduction: Strategic native establishment and targeted invasive species suppression frameworks that minimize mowing regimes, cut repetitive herbicide treatments, and permanently stabilize slopes and shorelines against erosion.
Why Clients Choose Natural Communities Consulting
Navigating ecological mandates shouldn't stall site development, trigger regulatory violations, or drain operational budgets. Nick bridges the gap between civil engineering specifications, local stormwater ordinances, and field-level botanical execution. Backed by the seed and native plant supply infrastructure of Natural Communities LLC, projects benefit from genetically appropriate regional ecotypes matched precisely to site-specific soils and hydrology.
Whether you require third-party compliance monitoring, threatened species clearance strategies, or an end-to-end natural area master plan, Nick Fuller delivers authoritative, science-based ecological solutions built for long-term permanence.

Natural communities and specifically Nick has been an
excellent and knowledgeable entity to work with on my big project. With the
help of my school, my students, many community partners, and Natural
Communities, we are in the process of restoring an area on a high school campus
to a natural prairie/pond area. Nick has come out to do site visits, he has
recommended various plant species that would work best for us, and he has been
able to get us what we want wholesale. Our site is not an easy project because
we are restricted to only native plants and native seeds and Natural
Communities has excelled in meeting our needs on this. Overall, I am so glad we
ended up working with Natural Communities because they have helped so much.

Our company has worked with Nick Fuller since before he
became Chief Ecological Officer for Natural Communities, LLC. His
knowledge of native plants and native seeds is remarkable. Nick was the
original steward of our 4-acre wildflower/wild grass prairie and has served us
as a reliable consultant ever since 2006. His continuing insights have
helped us to maintain and grow a healthy ecosystem.

I am extremely pleased with the one hour consultation I had
with Nick Fuller regarding our wetland creek. We have invasive plants and
grasses that have taken over our creek bed and we needed guidance on how to
both effectively remove the invasives and restore the area with native
plants suitable for the creek. Nick asked pertinent questions that allowed Nick
to identify plants and shrubs suitable for the area with a timeline for
planting. Nick also provided a detailed outline of the steps needed to remove the
invasives. I highly recommend Nick to anyone seeking help with their native
plant garden or to anyone interested in growing a native plant garden.

Spoke to owner in depth regarding a couple of different
projects I’m working on- very knowledgeable and professional. I plan on
purchasing seed for my projects through Natural Communities and will follow up
in the future if necessary. Highly recommend for native/natural projects!
