Carex aquatilis (Water Sedge) is a warm season sedge that forms a rhizomatous mass and reaches about five feet high. It can be quite aggressive so if used in wetland restorations it can compete well with invasive species, however, be cautious on small landscapes.  This sedge prefers standing water, but can also thrive in saturated soil conditions. Many butterflies, moths and skippers use it as larval food and several species of waterfowl consume the seeds.
