Aronia melancarpa (Black Chokeberry) is an excellent smaller native shrub in smaller or larger landscapes (short native shrubs are not in large supply :)  It has a smaller more pleasing shape than its red relative for landscaping.  Its black fruit stays into winter providing a refreshing splash of interest in the dreary winter.  A great replacement for the invasive burning bush as it turns a spectacular red to orange in the fall. It's best when grouped together in a showy flowering bundle and allowed to naturally sucker.
