Design for the operating site—not just the planting day.
A native solar planting needs to work beneath and between arrays while allowing the site to be maintained. Natural Communities approaches solar vegetation planning as an ongoing stewardship question, not simply a list of plants described as short or pollinator-friendly.
Height, panel clearance and tall weeds
Define the project's actual vegetation-height constraints, where those limits apply, and how unwanted tall growth will be identified and managed. A low-growing seed mix is not a substitute for an ongoing weed-management strategy.
Access and maintenance operations
Consider equipment access, row spacing, mowing reach, drainage features and the practical work needed around infrastructure. A planting design and a maintenance approach should be developed together.
Conditions change through time
Plan for establishment and for later years, including vegetation changes, maintenance observations and adjustments. The discussion should include responsibilities, monitoring, intervention priorities and a realistic long-term budget.
Use field-informed ecological judgment
A desktop species list cannot replace an assessment of the site and its operational constraints. The appropriate mix and management approach need to reflect the ground conditions, project specifications and how the property will actually be maintained.
Does this calculator give me a solar seed rate or price?
No. It calculates area only. Seed quantities, formulation, purchasing costs and maintenance budgets require additional project information and a confirmed specification. A result is not a quote, a performance guarantee or a permit-compliance determination.
