Deciduous shrub 15-25' tall with distinctive horizontal branching. Small, fragrant, yellowish-white flat-topped flowers appear in late spring. Flowers give way to bluish-black fruits (drupes) that mature in summer. Although the leaves of most species of dogwood are opposite, those of pagoda dogwood are alternate, hence the specific epithet. This plant needs either wet and part sun or with normal soils shade, but if really prefers wet.
