Pagoda Dogwood has horizontally spreading branches that form distinct layers, giving this small tree a broad profile even before it flowers. Flat clusters of white flowers appear in spring, followed by blue-black fruit eaten by birds. The foliage turns reddish purple in fall. At maturity, it can reach about 15 to 25 feet tall and spread wider than its height, so allow room for the branching pattern to develop.

Choose a partly shaded site with moist, well-drained soil and protection from drying winds. A woodland edge or sheltered planting beneath taller trees suits it better than an exposed, drought-prone bed. Mulch over the root area to conserve moisture, and select a location where its eventual width will not require repeated pruning.

Plant characteristics

Deciduous shrub 15-25' tall with distinctive horizontal branching. Small, fragrant, yellowish-white flat-topped flowers appear in late spring. Flowers give way to bluish-black fruits (drupes) that mature in summer. Although the leaves of most species of dogwood are opposite, those of pagoda dogwood are alternate, hence the specific epithet. This plant needs either wet and part sun or with normal soils shade, but it really prefers wet.
