Mesic to dry prairies are Prairie Sunflower's preferred habitat. Helianthus pauciflorus is an perennial with a slightly varied appearance.  It can be aggressive unless kept in check with another aggressive prairie natives. It can be found intermingling found with Dalea purpurea, Monarda fistulosa, and Symphyotrichum laeve. It is an attractive plant to pollinators and attracts the ellusive Gorgone Checkerspot butterfly
