Quercus rubra (Red Oak)

One of the best shade-tolerant oaks, and an excellent tree with great potential for red fall color. It is on the decline in the Chicago area so this could be an excellent choice to help out regional ecology and excellent for backyard habitat featured centerpiece. However, reds are not without its problems, they seem to be more susceptible to oak wilt, many older individuals have hollow trunks, and prefer rich soils.
