Silphium perfoliatum (Cup Plant)


Yellow flowers on branches up to 10'. Pairs of coarse-toothed leaves meet at and surround the square stem, forming a cup or reservoir that holds water, attracting birds and insects, and folklore has it that the early settlers drank from these plants to survive. Prefers moist to wet soils.
