Acer nigrum (Black Maple) is now considered a subspecies of Sugar Maple. It has similar characteristics to Sugar Maple and is known for its excellent fall color. When fully grown it provides a dense shade perfect for patios and homes. However, this shade can be too dense sometimes even for the most shade tolerant plants including turf grass.
